If you wanted to, and if you had the time,
it would probably be possible to write a lengthy series of books covering all
the ways it's possible to configure and specify the latest Ford F-150. But before
pickup truck buyers delve into the minute detail of configuring a 2020 Ford
F-150 to their particular and quite specific requirements, they need to know
about the main features and specs, so here they are.
Trim levels
The number of available F-150 trim levels
is quite modest with there being just seven of them. Of course, trim levels are
just the start, and that's before we get into cabs, beds, engines and
drivetrains. The entry-level F-150
is the XL, and from there the range progresses through XLT, Lariat, King Ranch,
Platinum, Limited trims, until the range tops out with the mighty F-150 Raptor.
Cabs and beds
The F-150 has three different cabs for buyers
to choose between, which are the Regular Cab, SuperCab and the SuperCrew. The
Regular Cab is the two-door version with a single bench seat, the SuperCab is
the one with those small rear doors and back seats, while the SuperCrew is the
largest cab with full-size rear doors and copious amounts of room inside.
These truck beds come in three sizes, which are 8-foot, 5-foot-6 and 6-foot-6. Apart from the Raptor, all models are standard rear-wheel-drive with four-wheel-drive availability.
Engines
There are a staggering six different engine
options for the 2020 Ford F-150. The standard unit is a 3.3-litre V-6 that
offers 290 horsepower and 265 lb.-ft. of torque, but it's only found in XL and
XLT trims, and most of the time it will have been upgraded to another available
powerplant. After that, we have the popular 2.7-litre EcoBoost V-6, the old
faithful 5.0-litre V-8, a 3.5-litre EcoBoost twin-turbo V-6, a 3.0-liter V-6
turbodiesel, and a high-output version of the 3.5-litre EcoBoost that's only
available in the Limited and Raptor versions of the F-150.
The 2.7 is a popular choice because it
offers the same 400 lb.-ft. of torque as the V-8, but the V-6 turbo is more
frugal on gas. But with good economy, 250 horsepower, and 425 lb.-ft. of torque
available, the 3.0-litre turbodiesel is sure to be a popular choice going
forwards.
Features and equipment
This is where it starts to get complicated,
but in a good way, because you can pretty much get any feature you want in a
2020 Ford F-150. It's probably best to break the lineup down into three classes
of work trucks, luxury trucks, and performance trucks. The XL and XLT trims get
essential features such as air conditioning, but they also include the likes of
automatic on/off headlights with auto high-beam, Curve Control, a rearview
camera with dynamic hitch-assist, individual tire pressure monitors and more.
Lariat, Platinum, Limited and King Ranch
trims are where the real luxury trucks lie. There's no base engine and no
regular cab availability, but even the Lariat piles on goodies like an 8.0-inch
touchscreen infotainment system, satellite radio, and a host of standard active
safety kit. Of course, go for a Platinum or Limited model and you’re then
challenging luxury sedans for luxury, features, and equipment.
The Raptor resides in its own category as
the only genuine muscle truck currently coming out of the factory that way.
It's a performance truck few people probably really need, but they're so
fantastic these amazing Ford trucks, its hard to resist if budgets allow.
